Everyone has a dream. It might be about vacation “someplace nice”, away from the hustle and bustle of modern world. It might be about meeting someone special and “living happily ever after”. It might be about becoming a famous writer, doctor, singer, scientist… There are millions of dreams and some of them come true. Whisper of the Heart shows how it might happen.
Whisper of the Heart (1995) is a Japanese animated film about a schoolgirl Shizuku Tsukishima. She likes to read and is fond of creative writing. Like most girls her age, she is shy around boys. However, she gets curious about a person who has been reading the same books she was checking out from the school library. This is how she meets Seiji Amasawa. At first, Seiji seems distant and strange, but as she gets to know him better, Shizuku notices that he is smart, ambitious (in a positive way) and talented. Two supporting plot lines run along the main story: one gets a glimpse of an everyday life in school and discovers some mysteries of an antique shop.
Seiji and Shizuku become friends. Through their relationship the story reveals how exciting it is to follow a dream and how it might change one’s life. However, it warns those who are seeking success that the road to it is far from smooth and it takes months of hard work in order to achieve desirable results. Nevertheless, sleepless nights and moments of despair should not discourage one from following the chosen road.
Although the setting and story are quite simple, the anime contains important messages for the audience of any age. It shows that everyone can make mistakes; this is a natural part of learning process. It emphasizes the importance of listening to the heart or one’s inner voice. It makes us believe in good and hope for happiness, which could be just around the corner.
