Finland, late September.
Mommy, mommy! Why are the trees so golden red?
The colored ones are on fire, honey. Don’t go near them; you might burn yourself.
Mommy, mommy! Why is the sky so dark and grey?
It’s the smoke from the burning wood. Don’t look at it; it might make you cry.
Mommy, mommy! Why is it now so warm and bright?
The forest fire is gaining on us. Run away as fast as you can!
Mother and son bounded away hand-in-hand, just as quickly as their legs could carry them. When they were safely out of sight, September’s glory lit up the entire expanse of woodland wilderness in a breathtaking interplay between colors and sunshine. The view was unparallelled: Autumn had arrived.
